For the first time in history, Ontario college students have the option to receive a full tuition refund if they choose to withdraw from college due to the recent faculty strike. College Student Alliance (CSA) advocated specifically for tuition refunds directly to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD).

Students will have a two-week window to return to classes, determine how comfortable they are with a condensed semester, and then have the option to withdraw and receive a full tuition refund. Apprentices who are unable to complete in-school training are also eligible for a full refund of classroom fees. In addition to a tuition refund, students will receive Ontario Student Assistance Plan (OSAP) funding for the length of their semester extension. The Ministry also confirmed OSAP extension payments for students will begin in mid-December, and if students choose to withdraw, their OSAP grants will not be turned into loans.

After a record-long strike lasting over 5 weeks, College Student Alliance (CSA) is relieved Ontario’s college students and faculty will be back in class this week.

After the longest college strike in Ontario’s history, students could return to the classroom on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the College Employer Council (CEC) failed to successfully negotiate a new collective bargaining deal, resulting in the Government of Ontario passing back-to-work legislation.

College Student Alliance urges the College Employer Council (CEC) and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) to agree to end the ongoing faculty strike through binding arbitration as students are coming dangerously close to losing their academic semester.  

Students have already lost nearly four weeks of class time. OPSEU and CEC cannot waste an additional 10 days of learning by waiting for a forced faculty vote. By agreeing to binding arbitration, OPSEU and CEC can reach a settlement quickly and prove students are their priority.

Members of the College Student Alliance (CSA) and students across Ontario are frustrated a collective agreement has not been reached between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the College Employers Council (CEC), resulting in full-time college faculty striking as of 12:01 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16. Students are the at-risk party in this dispute between administration and faculty. College students urge negotiating parties to return to the bargaining table and reach an agreement immediately.
