CSA Calls on All Political Parties to Prioritize PSE in this Provincial Election

Ontario — As the province approaches a pivotal election, the College Student Alliance is calling on all political parties to recognize and fix the critical funding challenges facing post-secondary education. CSA has outlined a series of recommendations aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability, accessibility, and quality of education for all students.
“Post-secondary education is the backbone of our province’s future, driving innovation, economic growth, and social mobility,” said Jasmine Bates, President of the CSA. “However, years of underfunding have strained institutions, increased costs for students, and jeopardized the quality of education. It’s time for decisive action - now more than ever before.”
The recommendations focus on key priorities, including:
(1) Increase Operating Grants: Include increasing operating grants in their election platforms and commitments to ensure financial sustainability of PSE.
(2) Regulate International Student Tuition: Commit to implementing a predictable formula for international tuition - as outlined by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
(3) Enhance Student Financial Aid: Implement an income-contingent loan system, eliminate interest on Ontario student loans, remove minimum loan requirements for low-income students, and increase grant proportions in the financial aid mix.
(4) Improve Student Support Services: Consider targeted funding for student-centred housing support, food security initiatives, and mental health services.
CSA urges all parties to commit to these recommendations in their campaign commitments and engage with students to understand the realities they face.
“As political leaders, you have the power to create meaningful change,” added Bates. “We ask that you make post-secondary education a priority in your vision for our province.”
